Unit 5 : Special Days
By the end of this unit, you will be able to learn and practices words related to special days in Cambodia, use simple past tense of all forms accurately and identify the meaning of some frequently used prefixes and suffixes. Vocabulary will be explained in English with examples plus Khmer translations. Grammar will be split into use, forms and examples and lastly, there will be some practices to check your comprehension.
Vocabulary : Special Days
Special days refer to the days that we consider as the most significant day in our life. Different people have different special days. What are your special days? Why do you consider them as your special days? Here are some special days in Cambodia along with other key vocabulary from the entire unit 5.
Special Days

English Meanings
1. Wedding day
Meaning: The day when two people get married.
Example: My sister looked beautiful on her wedding day.
2. Graduation day
Meaning: The day when students finish school or university and receive their certificates.
Example: My family came to my graduation day.
3. Death anniversary
Meaning: A day each year when people remember someone who has died.
Example: We visit our grandfather’s grave on his death anniversary.
4. Birthday
Meaning: The day each year when you were born.
Example: I have a birthday party with my family every year.
5. Ceremony (n)
Meaning: A special event for an important occasion.
Example: We attended a school ceremony yesterday.
6. Festival (n)
Meaning: A special time when people celebrate something together.
Example: Khmer New Year is a popular festival in Cambodia.
7. Present (n)
Meaning: Something you give someone as a gift.
Example: I gave my friend a birthday present.
8. Note (n)
Meaning: A short message written on paper.
Example: My teacher gave me a note about the school meeting.
9. Attend (v)
Meaning: To go to an event, class, or meeting.
Example: Many students attend the school ceremony.
10. Neighbor (n)
Meaning: A person who lives near your home.
Example: Our neighbor helped us decorate the house.
11. Decorate (v)
Meaning: To make a place look beautiful by adding things.
Example: We decorate our house for Khmer New Year.
12. Lantern (n)
Meaning: A light inside a cover, often used for decoration or festivals.
Example: We hung colorful lanterns around the house for the festival.
Simple Past Tense
Use : Simple past tense is used to talk about the action that happened and finished at a specific time in the past. Past time expressions is always used to tell the exact time in the past. Here are some commonly used expressions used with simple past tense.
Last : week, month, year
Ago : 2 hours ago, a minute a go, 3 months ago
Name of year : in 2005, in 1960s
Name of the month : January, February, (Now it is August)
This morning ( It is now afternoon)
This afternoon ( It is now evening)
Forms of Simple Past Tense
Positive : Sub + Ved + past time expression.
- I visited Angkor Wat Temple 10 years ago.
- She called me last night.
- They went of a trip a month ago.
- We went shopping this morning.
Negative : Sub + didn't + base verb + past time expression?
- I didn't visit Angkor Wat Temple last year.
- She didn't call me last night.
- They didn't go on a trip a day ago.
- We didn't go shopping yesterday.
Yes/No : Did + sub + base verb + past time expression?
- Did you visit Angkor Wat Temple last year?
- Did she call you last night?
- Did they go on a trip a month ago?
- Did they go shopping this morning?
Wh-Question : Wh-word + did + sub + base verb + past expression?
- When did you visit Angkor Wat Temple?
- Why did she call you last night?
- Where did they go on a trip last month?
- Who did you go shopping with yesterday?
Spelling Rules
When we change a base verb to to past form, there are 3 rules to follow. We add -ed, -d and -ied. Now let's look at each rule one by one in detail with examples.
Adding - d : We add -d to the verb that ends in -e.
Love - loved
Like - liked
Move - moved
Save - saved
Adding -ied : When a verb ends in a constant + y, change y > -ied.
Study - studied
Cry - cried
Try - tried
Fry - fried
Multiply - multiplied
Adding - ed : We simply add -ed to the verb that doesn't follow rule 1 and 2.
Visit - visited
Stay - stayed
Watch - watched
Look - looked
Prefixes
Prefix is a group of letter used before a word to change the part of speech and meaning. Here some commonly used prefixes : in-, il-, in-, de-, in-
Re : means again ( play > replay)
Example : That song is beautiful can you replay it.
Un : not, opposite (important > unimportant)
Example : Please don't focus on something that is unimportant.)
Dis : not (honest > dishonest)
Example : Some people are dishonest so don't trust people easily.)
Miss : wrong ( understand > misunderstand
Example : Don't misunderstand what I am saying.
Pre : before ( reading > pre-reading)
Example : There is a pre-reading exercise to do before you read.
Under : below ( ground > underground )
There is no an underground road in Cambodia.
Suffixes
Suffix is a group of letter used at the end of a word to change the part of speech and meaning. Here are some commonly used suffixes used daily.
- ian : person of job ( music > musician)
Ex. She is a musician.
- ful : It is used to form an adjective and it means full of ( joy > joyful )
Ex. This is such a joyful party.
-or : person of job ( educate > educator)
Ex. I am an educator.
-ment : it is used to form a noun. ( Govern > government)
Ex. Our government is working so hard to protect our land.
-less : it is used to form an adjective and it means no. (Hope > hopeless)
Ex. Don't be hopeless. We never know what is going to happend next.
