Appearance, Personality and Phrasal Verbs

Learning how to describe people’s appearance and personality is an important part of learning English. These vocabulary words help you talk about what someone looks like, how someone behaves, and how you feel about their character. In this lesson, you will learn useful words such as tall, short, attractive, friendly, kind, smart, stubborn, and ambitious. You will also learn common phrasal verbs and expressions such as get along with, run into, show off, count on, and hang out. Each word and expression includes an easy meaning and a simple example sentence to help you understand and use the vocabulary in everyday English.

Appearance 

Appearance refers to how a person looks like. Describing a person appearance means describing basically the body of a person. Here is a list of adjectives which are used to describe a person appearance. To describe an a person's appearance, use these structures. 
Structure 1 : Sub + be ( am/is/are ) + appearance adjectives.
Ex. My sister is beautiful and tall. 

Structure 2 : Sub + have/has + appearance adjectives + part of the body.
Ex. Roza has long hair. 

Big :  ធំ

big – large in size.

Example: He is a big man.


Small : តូច

Small – not large.

Example: She has a small body.


Tall : ខ្ពស់

Tall – having a great height.

Example: My brother is very tall.


Short : ទាប

Short – not tall.

Example: My sister is short.


Young : ក្មេង

Young – not old.

Example: The girl is very young.


Old : ចាស់

Old – having lived for many years.

Example: My grandfather is old.


Attractive : ដែលទាក់ទាញ

Attractive – good-looking and pleasant to look at.

Example: She is very attractive.


Youthful : ដែលជំទង់

Youthful – looking young.

Example: My mother looks youthful.


Bald : ទំពែក

Bald – having little or no hair on the head.

Example: My uncle is bald.


Blonde : ដែលមាសក់ទង់ដែង

Blonde – having yellow or light-colored hair.

Example: She has blonde hair.


Chubby : ដែលធាត់គួរអោយស្រឡាញ់

Chubby – slightly fat in a cute way.

Example: The baby has chubby cheeks.


Fat : ធាត់

Fat – having too much body weight.

Example: The dog is fat.


Thin : ស្គម

Thin – having little body fat.

Example: He is tall and thin.


Fit : មានរាងរឹងមាំ (មិនធាត់ មិនស្គម)

Fit – healthy and physically strong.

Example: My father is very fit.


Flabby : ដែលល្វេតល្វត

Flabby – soft and loose because of extra body fat.

Example: His arms are flabby.


Muscular : ដែលមានសាច់ដុំ

Muscular – having strong, large muscles.

Example: The man is muscular.


Plain :  ធម្មតា

Plain – not especially beautiful or attractive.

Example: She has a plain face.


Pretty : ដែលស្រស់ស្អាត

Pretty – attractive, usually used for girls or women.

Example: The girl is very pretty.

Personality

Personality refers the qualities of a person. It is the combination feelings, thoughts and behaviors that drive a person to behave a particular way in a particular place. To describe a person's personality, please use the structure below.
Sub + personality adjectives + (noun).
Ex. She is kind and polite. 
Ex. She is a kind and polite girl. 

Polite : ដែលគួរសម

Polite – having good manners.

Example: She is polite to her teachers.


Friendly : ដែលរស់រាយ

Friendly – kind and pleasant to other people.

Example: My new neighbor is very friendly.


Kind : ដែលមានចិត្តល្អ

Kind – caring and helpful.

Example: He is kind to everyone.


Smart : ដែលឆ្លាត

Smart – clever and good at learning.

Example: Dara is a smart student.


Funny : ដែលកំប្លែង

Funny – making people laugh.

Example: My brother is very funny.


Easy-going : ដែលមិនប្រកាន់ច្រើន

Easy-going – relaxed and easy to be with.

Example: My teacher is easy-going.


Rude : ដែលឆ្លើយ

Rude – not polite.

Example: It is rude to shout at people.


Selfish : ដែលអាត្មានិយម

Selfish – caring only about yourself.

Example: He is selfish and never shares his food.


Reliable : ដែលអាចទុកចិត្តបាន

Reliable – someone you can trust or depend on.

Example: She is reliable and always helps me.


Sensible : ដែលដឹងខុសត្រូវ

Sensible – making good and practical decisions.

Example: He is sensible with his money.


Sensitive : ដែលឆាប់ប្រតិកម្ម

Sensitive – easily affected by other people's words or feelings.

Example: She is sensitive to criticism.


Stubborn : ក្បាលរឹង

Stubborn – unwilling to change your mind.

Example: My brother is very stubborn.


Aggressive : ដែលឆេវឆាវ

Aggressive – acting in an angry or forceful way.

Example: The man became aggressive during the argument.


Ambitious : ដែលលោភលន់

Ambitious – wanting to be successful.

Example: She is ambitious and wants to become a doctor.


Independent : ដែលឯករាជ្យ

Independent – able to do things without help from others.

Example: My daughter is very independent.


Jealous : ដែលច្រណែនគេ

Jealous – unhappy because someone has something you want.

Example: He is jealous of his friend's new car.


Bossy : ដែលចូលចិត្តបញ្ជាគេ

Bossy – always telling other people what to do.

Example: My little sister is bossy.


Phrasal Verbs and Expressions

Get along with somebody : ងាយចុះចំណោមគេ 

Get along with somebody – to have a good relationship with someone.

Example: I get along well with my classmates.


Run into somebody : ជួបដោយចៃដន្យ

Run into somebody – to meet someone unexpectedly.

Example: I ran into my old teacher at the market.


Down-to-earth :  សាមញ្ញ

Down-to-earth – practical, friendly, and not proud.

Example: Our new teacher is very down-to-earth.


Show off : អួត

Show off – to try to make people admire you.

Example: He likes to show off his new phone.


Count on somebody : ទុកចិត្តលើនរណាម្នាក់

Count on somebody – to trust someone to help you.

Example: You can count on me when you need help.


Stick up for somebody : គាំទ្រ និង ការពារនរម្នាក់

Stick up for somebody – to defend someone.

Example: My friend stuck up for me when someone blamed me.


Let somebody down : ធ្វើអោយនរណាម្នាក់ខកចិត្ត

Let somebody down – to disappoint someone.

Example: Please don't let me down.


Hang out : ចំណាយពេលខាងក្រៅជាមួយមិត្តភក្តិ

Hang out – to spend time relaxing with friends.

Example: We usually hang out after school.


Hear from somebody : ទទួលការពត៍មាន ពីនរណាម្នាក់

Hear from somebody – to receive news or a message from someone.

Example: I haven't heard from him for a week.


Come between : មានបញ្ហា

Come between – to cause two people to have problems with each other.

Example: Money came between the two brothers.2
