Part 3 : Grammar

Present Simple with he, she, it

Use : Present Simple is used to talk about things that we do regularly, something that is always true and schedule. We can technically name these 3 main usages as Habits, Facts and Schedules.

Forms: When Present Simple is used with he, she and it, the main verb must be added with -s, -es and -ies in a positive sentence. Do not and does not are used in a negative Sentence. Do and does are used in questions.

Positive : Sub + V -s, yes, -ies + .......

Negative : Sub + don't / doesn't + base verb .....

Yes/No : Do / does + sub + base verb...?

Wh-Question : Wh-word + do / does + sub + base verb?

Adding : -s, -es, and -ies

Rule 1 : add -es to the verb that ends in - ss, - sh, - ch, - x, - o

Example

- He kisses his kids before he leaves fro work every morning .

- Roza always washes her face when she gets up.

- My grandfather watches TV every evening.

- My sister does the laundry every weekend.

Rule 2 : Change y to -ies when a verb ends in a consonant + y.

Example

- He studies with me in grade 5.

- My mom sometimes fries fish for dinner.

- My bother always tries hard to study.

- Baby cries when he or she is hungry.

Rule 3 : Add -s to the verbs that don't follow rule 1 and 2.

Example

- My teacher assigns homework 2 times a week.

- Nara waters her plants every morning.

- Tom often plays soccer on the weekend with his friends.

- Jenny visits her mom in the countryside twice a month.

Adverbs of Frequency

An adverb of frequency is basically used before the main verb to tell how frequent a person does something. Here are some basic adverbs of frequency. Never, sometimes, often, usually, always.

100% — Always : Something happens every time.

Example: I always brush my teeth in the morning.

90% — Usually : Something happens most of the time.

Example: She usually walks to school.

80% — Normally / Generally : Something happens very often or in most situations.

Example: We normally eat dinner at 7 p.m.

70% — Often : Something happens many times.

Example: He often plays football after school.

50% — Sometimes : Something happens some of the time.

Example: I sometimes watch TV in the evening.

30% — Occasionally : Something happens from time to time.

Example: They occasionally go to the cinema.

10% — Rarely / Seldom : Something does not happen very often.

Example: She rarely eats fast food.

5% — Hardly ever : Something almost never happens.

Example: I hardly ever drink coffee.

0% — Never : Something does not happen at any time.

Example: He never smokes.

Frequency Scale

Always → Usually → Normally → Often → Sometimes → Occasionally → Rarely → Hardly ever → Never

100% → 90% → 80% → 70% → 50% → 30% → 10% → 5% → 0%

  • She often reads books.
  • They sometimes play basketball.
