Past Modals explained in Khmer : Could have, should have, would have , might have

 Introduction to Past Modals

Past Modals are pretty common in English since they are frequently used in daily conversation. Understanding the key uses and forms is essential for ESL learners to speak and write grammatically accurate. In this lesson, we will be exploring some helpful past Modals such as could have, might have, must have and should have.

Past modal could have should have must have

Past Modal - Could have

Could have + past participle is used to talk about having the ability to do something in the past or something that was possible in the past but we didn't do or it didn't happend. 

I could have passed exam if I review the lesson regularly. ខ្ញំអាចនិងបានប្រឡើងជាប់ ប្រសិនបើខ្ញុំបានរំលឹកមេរៀនបានទៀងទាត់។

Now I didn't pass the exam because I didn't review the lesson. I had the ability to review the lesson but I just didn't do.

Could have បកប្រែរថា អាចនិង ប្រើដើម្បីនិយាយអំពី ភាពដែលអាចកើតឡើង ឬសមត្ថភាពដែលអាចធ្វើបាន ក្នុងអតីតកាល តែយើងមិនបានធ្វើវា។ 

More examples

- They could have won the match if the had enough practice.

- Her car could have crashed into a tree if she didn't brake it on time.

- He could have been we if he didn't bring with him the umbrella.

- I could have forgotten her birthday If you didn't remind me.

Past Modal - Might have

Might have + past participle is used to to guess something in the past that means we are not sure about the thing if they happen or not it is just our opinion. ប្រើដើម្បីទាយនូវអ្វីដែលអាចនិងបានកើតឡើងក្នុងអតីតកាលដោយផ្អែគលើការគិតរបស់យើង។ 

Tom : Where is ROZA? She is supposed to be here now.

David : I don't know sir. She might have been stuck in the traffic.

She has been stuck in the traffic means that David is not sure if she really got stuck in the traffic it is just his guess based on his opinion. 

More examples

Why didn't she join your birthday? I have no idea.

- She might have forgotten my birthday.

- She might have been busy?

- She might have been late? 

In this case, could have can also be used as an alternative and it means the same thing.

- She could have forgotten my birthday.

- She could have been busy?

- She could have been late? 

Past Modal - Should have

Should have + past participle is used to talk about something was a good idea to do in the past but we didn't do it.​ It also an advice to some or regret when we are talking about ourself. 

Roza failed in an important exam. She would have studied harder for it.

In the example above, should have is an advice or a good idea for her to study harder so she could have passed her exam. But she didn't study harder and she failed.

Tom is in the hospital now because he ate many random foods. He shouldn't have eaten so many random foods.

It was a good idea for Tom not to eat so many random foods so he would not have to go to the hospital. But unluckily he ate so much. 

I sold my gold at low price but now the price is so high. I shouldn't have sold all my gold.

The example above is my regret now about my past action of selling my gold at low price.
