First Conditional : If + present simple, Sub + will + base verb is used talk about something that is possible in the present and future when a condition is met. It has two parts which are the conditional clause and the result clause. In the conditional clause, present simple is used and in the main or result clause modal verb "will" is used but other modal verbs like may, might, could, can and should can also be used to express low different levels of possibilities, permission and advice. What is First Conditional ?
First Conditional is another another essential English grammar which is used very frequently in our daily life. When we are taking about what is possible in the future, when we are making a promise, the First Conditional is used. what make the first Conditional different from the Zero Conditional is the modal verb "will" used in the main clause.
How do we form First Conditional?
First Conditional also has two important clauses which are the conditional clause and the result clause. The conditional clause can also be called the if-clause and the reason clause. The result clause can also be called the main clause. Present Simple is used in the conditional clause and modal verb "will" is used in the result clause.
If + Present Simple, Sub + will + base verb. OR Sub + will + base verb If + Present Simple.
Example
- If I have a lot of money, I will help poor people in my country.
- I will help you with your project if I have time.
What are the usages of First Conditional
First conditional is used to talk about future possibilities and promises. If the possibility is high or if you are sure about the result, use modal verbs "will' but if the possibility is low or you are unsure then use these modal verbs : could, may, might.
First Conditional ប្រើដើម្បីនិយាយអំពីអ្វីដែលអាចកើតឡើងក្នងពេលអនាគត់ ឬការសន្យា។ ប្រសិនបើភាពដែលអាចកើតមានឡើងមានកម្រឹត ខ្ពស់ យើងប្រើ will ប្រសិនភាពដែលអាចកើតមានឡើង មានកម្រឹតទាប ឬ នៅពេលដែលយើងមិនច្បាស់ យើងអាចប្រើ could , may , might។
Making Promises
- If you lend me your book, I will return it to you tomorrow. ប្រសិនបើអ្នកអោយខ្ញុំខ្ចីសៀវភៅ ខ្ញុំនិងសងអ្នកវិញនោះថ្ងៃស្អែក។
- I will go on the trip with you if I am free this weekend. ខ្ញុំនិងចូលរួមដំណើរកម្សាន្តជាមួយអ្នក ប្រសិនបើខ្ញុំទំនេរនៅចុងសប្តាហ៍នេះ។
- Will you keep it as a secrete if I tell you this story? តើអ្នកនិងទុកវាជាការសម្ងាត់ទេ បើខ្ញុំប្រាប់រឿងនេះដល់អ្នក?
- I will marry you if I have enough money. ខ្ញុំនិងរៀការជាមួយអ្នកប្រសិនបើខ្ញុំ មានប្រាក់គ្រប់គ្រាន់
As you can see in the four example above, the first conditional is used to make promises. ក្នុងឧទាហរណ៍ទាំង៤ខាងលើ សុទ្ធសឹងតែជាការសន្យាដោយប្រើប្រាស់ First Conditional ។
Future Possibilities
- She will fail in the exam if she doesn't work harder. នាងនិងប្រឡងធ្លាក់ ប្រសិនបើនាងមិនខំរៀនអោយបានច្រើនជាងមុន។
- If you tell her the truth, she will forgive you. ប្រសិនបើអ្នកប្រាប់នាងអំពីការពិត នាងនិងអត់អោនអោយអ្នក។
- If aliens invade us, all countries will come together as one to fight back. ប្រសិនបើមនុស្សក្រៅភពឈ្លានពានយើង ប្រទេសទាំងអស់និងរួមគ្នា ដើម្បីវាយតបតវិញ។
- Do you run if you see a ghost? តើអ្នករត់ទេ ប្រសិនបើអ្នកឃើញខ្មោច?
Four examples above are telling us the future possibilities or things that are possible in the future. ក្នុងឧទាហរណ៍ខាងលើ វានិយាយប្រាប់យើងអំពីអ្វីដែលអាចនិងកើតឡើងក្នុងពេលអនាគត់។
What Modal verbs can be used in the First Conditional?
There are some modal verbs that can be used in the first conditional which are will, could, may, might, can, must. Modal verbs are used to express different level of possibilities, give advices or recommendations.
Will (និង) : if the possibility is certain. សម្រាប់ភាពដែលអាចកើតឡើងមានកម្រឹតខ្ពស់
- If you try to study hard, you will pass the exam easily. ប្រសិនព្យាយាមរៀន អ្នកនិងប្រឡងជាប់បានដោយងាយស្រួល។
- If you eat a lot of sugary food, your teeth will decay faster. ប្រសិនបើអ្នកញាំអាហារផ្អែមច្រើន ធ្មេញអ្នកនិងពុកឆាប់។
- We will get sick if we go to bed late very often. អ្នកនិងឈឺប្រសិនបើអ្នកទៅគេងយប់ជ្រៅញឹកញាប់។
- She gets mad if you don't tell her. នាងនិងខឹងប្រសិនបើអ្នកមិនប្រាប់នាង។
May/Might (អាចនិង) : if the possibility is less certain or low. សម្រាប់ភាពមិនច្បាស់លាស់
- If I have time, I may join your trip. ប្រសិនបើមានពេល ខ្ញុំអាចនិងចូលរួមដំណើរកម្សាន្តរបស់អ្នក។
- She might get angry if you don't invite her. នាងអាចនិងខឹងប្រសិនបើអ្នកមិនអញ្ចើញនាង។
- It might be late if we go by car. វាអាចនឹងយឺតប្រសិនបើយើងទៅដោយឡាន។
- Teacher may not accept our your assignment if you submit after the deadline. គ្រូអាចនិងមិនទទួលយកកិច្ចការស្រាវជ្រាវរបស់អ្នកទេ ប្រសិនបើអ្នកប្រគល់វាបន្ទាប់ពីថ្ងៃដែលផុតកំណត់។
Can (អាច) : Give permission សម្រាប់អោយការអនុញ្ញាត
- If you finish your test, you can leave. ប្រសិនបើអ្នកប្រឡងចប់ អ្នកអាចចេញមិនមបាន។
- If you don't mind, you can sit there. ប្រសិនបើអ្នកមិនប្រកាន់ អ្នកអាចអង្គុយទីនោះបាន។
Should (គួរតែ) : Give advice សម្រាប់អោយដំបូលន្មាន
- If you catch a cold, you should drink warm water. ប្រសិនបើអ្នកឈឺផ្តាសសាយ អ្នកគួរតែផឹកទឹកក្តៅ។
- You should take time to relax if you feel stressed very often.
- If you want to get fit, you should do exercise regularly.
- If you want to speak English fast, you should practice speaking as much as you can.
Must (ត្រូវតែ) : Give strong advice សម្រាប់អោយដំបូលន្មានខ្លាំង
- You must stop smoking if you don't want to die soon. អ្នកត្រូវតែឈប់ជក់បារី ប្រសិនបើអ្នកមិនចង់ស្លាប់ឆាប់។
- You must water the plants regularly if you don't want them to wither. អ្នកត្រូវតែស្រោចរុក្ខជាតិអោយបានទៀងទាត់ ប្រសិនបើអ្នក មិនចង់អោយពួកវាស្វិត។
- If you want to get good grade on your exam, you must review the lesson regularly.
- If you want your plants grow well, you must water and fertilize them regularly.
