Past Perfect Vs Simple Past Tense

The action in Past perfect Tense ( Sub + had + V3) happened and finished before the action in Simple Past Tense ( Sub + V2....). The tip to help us pick the correct tense between simple past and past perfect is to look at the actions. There are two past actions in the past, the one that happened first, use past perfect tense and the one that happened later, use simple past tense.

He had done his homework before he went to bed.

គាត់បានធ្វើកិច្ចការផ្ទះរួចហើយ មុនពេលគាត់ទៅគេង។ យើងឃើថាមានសកម្មភាពក្នងអតីតកាល២ ទី១ សកម្មភាពធ្វើកិច្ចការផ្ទះ ទី២ សកម្មភាពទៅគេង។ សកម្មភាពទី១ បានកើតឡើងមុនដូចនេះ យើងប្រើវាជា Past Perfect Tense ។

1. Past Perfect Tense

Past Perfect is used to talk about the action that happened and finished before another past action or event. It is basically used with after, before.

Forms

Positive : Sub + had + past participle (V3).

• She had lived in the countryside before 2010.
• He had locked the door before he left.
• After she had done the laundry, she turned on TV.
• Roza had called her mom before she left.
• When the police arrived, all the thieves had disappeared.
• They had prepared a lot before they presented it to the audience.

Negative : Sub + hadn't (had not) + V3.

• She hadn't lived in the countryside before 2010.
• He hadn't locked the door before he left.
• She hadn't done the laundry before she turned on TV.
• Roza hadn't called her mom before she left.
• When the police arrived, all the thieves hadn't disappeared.
• They hadn't prepared a lot before they presented it to the audience. 

Yes/No  : Had + Sub + V3..........?

• Had she lived in the countryside before 2000?
• Had she locked the door before she left? 
• Had they done their homework before thay played game?
• Had the students left when the teacher arrived?
• Had you done good preparation before you presented it? 

Wh-Question: Wh-Word + had + Sub + V3......?

• What had you done before you went to bed?
• Where had she lived before 2000? 
• Who had you talked to before I arrived?
• Which car had he driven before he bought a new one? 
• How had people travelled before the invention of cars?

Note: The action in past perfect happened and finished before the action in simple past.

    He had locked the door before he left.

From this example, we can see the action of locking the door happened and finished before the action of leaving.

Conjunction " After & before" 

After conjunction after, we used past perfect tense. 

1. After she done her homework, she went to bed.
2. After we visited the temples, we went back to the hotel.
3. After he finished grade 12, he started his university.

Past Perfect is used before the conjunction before.

1. She had done her homework before she went to bed.
2. We had visited the temples before we went back to the hotel.
3. He had finished grade 12 before he started his university. 

2. Simple Past Tense

Simple Past Tense is used to talk about the action that happened and finished at a specific time in the past. Here are the time expressions we frequently use : yesterday, last week, in 2000, five days ago,..etc.  ប្រើដើម្បីនិយាយអំពី សកម្មភាពដែលបានកើតឡើង ហើយចប់ទៅវិញក្នុងពេលវេលាជាក់លាក់ ក្នុងអតីតកាល។ 

Example : I visited Angkor Wat Temple last year. ខ្ញុំបានទៅទស្សនាប្រាសាទអង្គវត្តកាលពីឆ្នាំមុន។ 

ក្នុងឧទាហរណ៍ខាងលើ សកម្មភាពទៅលេងអង្គរវត្តបានកើតឡើងនិងចប់ទៅវិញក្នុងពេលវេលាជាក់លាក់ (កាលពីឆ្នាំមុន)។

Positive : Sub + V-ed + ......

- I went to bed at 10 last night.

- She lived in the province in 2000.

- Teacher left the class 5 minutes ago.

- He met me yesterday.

Negative : Sub + didn't + base verb...

- I didn't go to bed at 9 last night.

- She didn't live in the city in 2000.

- Teacher didn't leave the class 5 minutes ago.

- I didn't meet him yesterday.

Yes/No : Did + sub + base verb?

- Did you go to bed at 10 last night?

- Did she live in the countryside in 2000?

- Did the teacher leave the class 5 minutes ago?

- Did you meet him yesterday?

Information Question : Wh-word + did + sub + base verb?

- What time did you go to bed last night?

- Where did she live in 2000?

3. Comparison

Simple Past and Past Perfect Tense are frequently used together in the same sentence. And here are the tips to help you accurately pick the correct tense.

Past Perfect 

- The action happened before another past action.

- Earlier action

Simple Past

- The action happened after past perfect.

For example:

• Past Perfect clearly shows that eating happened before arriving.
• If the order is already obvious because of words such as after or before, Simple Past can sometimes be used.

Example:
After she finished her homework, she went to bed.
This is also correct because after already shows the order.

Answer : Yes.
Example:

• He had locked the door before he left.
• The Past Perfect action (had locked) happened first.
• Another example:
• They had eaten dinner before they watched TV.

Q6. Can I use Past Perfect with "after"?
Answer : Yes.
Example:

• After I had finished my homework, I played a game.
• The Past Perfect action happened first.
• However, when after already makes the sequence clear, Simple Past is also common:
• After I finished my homework, I played a game.

Both can be correct depending on the context and emphasis.

Answer : The basic formula is:
Positive:
Subject + had + V3

• She had gone home.

Negative:
Subject + had not / hadn't + V3

• She hadn't gone home.

Yes/No Question:
Had + subject + V3?

• Had she gone home?

Wh-Question:
Wh-word + had + subject + V3?

• Where had she gone?

Answer : Yes!
Unlike the verb be, Past Perfect uses had with every subject.
