Usage 1 : Habits/ Routines (ទម្លាប់ប្រចាំថ្ងៃ)
- I usually get up at 5 : 30 in the morning.
- My mom waters the plants two times a day.
- They play soccer every weekend.
- My dad goes to work at 7 in the morning.
- My sister does the laundry every Saturday.
Usage 2 : Facts/ General truths (ការពិត)
- The sun rises from the east.
- Water boils at 100 degree Celsius.
- Water freezes at 0 degree Celsius.
- Lions are the kings of the jungle.
- Dolphins are mammals.
Usage 3 : Schedules (កាលវិភាគ)
- My school starts at 8 in the morning and finishes at 5 in the evening.
- Supermarkets open at 9 am and close at 9 pm.
- This movie starts at 2 pm tomorrow.
- His flight departs at 5 this evening.
Forms
Positive : I, you, we, they + base verb + ..............He, she, it + V(-es,-ies,-s) + ................Negative : Sub + don't / doesn't + base verb .......Yes/No : Do/does + sub + base verb............?WH-Question : Wh-word + do/does + sub + base verb ......?
Wh-words
- What (noun) : ask for things. ( often used with a noun, ex. What book, what color..etc.)
- When : ask for time
- Where : ask for places
- Why : ask for a reason
- Which (noun) : ask for a choice ( often used with a noun, ex. which car, which one..etc.)
- Whose (noun) : ask for a possession. ( often use with a noun, ex. Whose car.., whose book)
- How : ask for a mean.
Note: ក្នុងប្រយោគស្រប កិរិយាសព្ទដែលប្រើជាមួយ he, she, it យើងចាំបាច់ត្រូវថែម -s, -es, -ies សូមចុចខាងក្រោមដើម្បីស្វែងយល់លម្អិត។
Spelling rules -s, -es and -ies
All verbs that are used with he, she and it in a positive sentence of present simple must be added with -s,-es and -ies. Here are the 3 main rules of adding-s.
Rule 1 : add –es to the verbs that end in –ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -o, -zz
- I miss my childhood. He misses his childhood.
- They wash the dishes. She washes the dishes.
- We watch movies on the weekends. She watches movies on the weekends.
- I often fix my car. He often fixes his car.
- Students go to school from Monday to Saturday. He goes to school from Monday to Saturday.
Rule 2: Change y to –ies when the verbs end in consonant + y.
- I study in grade 7. > He studies in grade 12.
- They try very become famous soccer players. > She tries to study for a grade on the exam.
- I fry fish for lunch today. > My mom fries fish today.
- They dry their clothes under the sun. Roza dries her clothes on top of her roof.
- We fly kites on windy days. My brother flies kites at the beach.
Rule 3: If a verb doesn’t follow rule 1 and 2, we simply add –s.
- I often play games for 30 minute before I go to bed. > He plays games every day.
- They usually hang out on the weekends. > She sometimes hangs out with friends.
- Most people like meat. > My mom likes vegetables.
- We normally feel lazy on Monday. He feels lazy on Monday.
