The
water cycle, also known as the hydrological cycle, is the journey water takes
as it moves from the land to the sky and back again. It all begins with the
sun, which heats up water in rivers, lakes, and oceans. This water evaporates
and turns into water vapor, rising into the sky. As the water vapor rises, it
cools down and forms tiny droplets. These droplets come together to create
clouds.
When
the clouds get heavy, the droplets fall back to Earth as precipitation.
Precipitation can be rain, snow, sleet, or hail, depending on the temperature.
This water then flows back into rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the cycle starts
all over again. Some of this water also seeps into the ground, replenishing
underground reservoirs called aquifers.
The
water cycle is important because it distributes fresh water across the planet,
supports all living organisms, and helps regulate the Earth's temperature.
