Making a request, offer, and permission

Modal verbs can actually be used to express different opinions and modal verbs are frequently used in daily life so it is essentially important as a language learner to know how to use them grammatically accurate to make conversation or take the exams. In this post, we are going to explore how modal verbs are used to express a request, permission and offer. 

Making Requests 

Making a request means asking someone to do us a favor. Subject "you" is frequently used since we tend to ask someone directly. Modal verbs could, would and can are used. ស្នើរអោយនរណាម្នាក់ធ្វើអ្វីមួយអោយយើង។

Could/would, can/will + you + base verb................., please?

  • could/would : more polite
  • can/will : less polite

Would you mind + Verb -ing ...................., please? 

Example

  • Could you open the windows, please? It is very hot in here. 
  • Can you pass me that pencil, please?
  • Would you help me move this desk, please?
  • Will you close the door, please?
  • Would you mind driving me home? 
  • Would you mind sitting down, please because I cannot not see the screen well? 

Asking Permission

Asking permission means you ask someone to grand you a right or privilege to do something. Modal verbs may, can, could are used.  ការសុំការអុនុញ្ញាតធ្វើអ្វីមួយ

May, could, can + I/we + base verb .........................., please?

  • May : most polite
  • Could : more polite
  • Can : less polite
Example
  • May I leave early today, please? I'm feeling very sick.
  • Teacher, may I go to the bathroom please?
  • Could we reschedule our school's trip to next week?
  • Sir, could I have your name please?
  • Can I borrow your book for a day, please?
  • Brother, can I sit here? 

Making offers

Making an offer means you are willing to help another person.ការជួយធ្វើអ្វីមួយដល់នរណាម្នាក់

Can/could
- Can I bring you something to drink?
- I can help you with that if you don't mind? 
- Could I buy you a coffee?
- I could book a hotel for you if you want.

Would

Would you like .......................?

  • Would you like me to bring you a drink?
  • Would you like a seat near the windows?
  • Would you like to drink something?
  • Would you like a tap of bottle water? 

Will

Sub + will + base verb..............
  • I'll carry that for you.
  • I'll drive you home.
  • I'll help you with that.
  • I'll show you how to use it. Don't worry.
  • I'll give 10$ if you can give me the correct answer for this question.
