Why do we need to learn Phrasal Verbs? 

As an ESL learner, learning phrasal verbs is essentially important to be able to communicate more effectively and confidently. Phrasal verbs are used widely by the native speakers. They are also used in movies, books, and on social media so learning phrasal verbs help us to better understand the contents of those things. In this lesson we are going to learn 30 phrasal verbs that are used in our daily life with easy English explanation plus Khmer translation. 

What is a Phrasal verb?

Phrasal Verbs is the combination of a verb and its particle. Phrasal has different meaning from its individual verb. 

Example : I gave up because I have tried so hard and it didn't work.

So, the phrasal verb in the example above is " give up" which means stop.

1. Give up : stop, quit ឈប់
Example : Don't give up too soon, success comes after many failures. 


2. Give in : to agree, to stop resisting ចុះចាញ់ ចុះចូល
Example: He finally gave in to his enemy. 


3. Give away : to give something for free to someone, donate អោយ
Example : We should give away what we don't use to the poor.


4. Give back : to return something back to the person we borrowed សង
Example : Please lend me your your bike, I'll give it back to you tomorrow.


5. Give off : to release, to let something out បញ្ចេញ
Example : Sun gives off radiation that can be harmful for our skin.


6. Look after : to take care of something or somebody មើលថែ
Example : I look after my kids.


7. Look back : think about he past រំលឹកអតីកាល
Example : Sometimes I look back on my childhood.


8. Look down on : to have a low opinion of somebody or something, don’t value other people. មើលងាយ
Example : We should never look down on others.

Example : We are looking into that problem and it will get fixed soon. 

13. Keep on : continue to do something បន្ត

14. break down : stop functioning, stop working ខូច
Example : My car broke down while I was driving yesterday.


15. Break up : to end a relationship with someone បែកបាក់គ្នា
Example : ROZA broke up with her husband yesterday.


16. Bring about : to make something happens, to occur, to be in existence ធ្វើអោយកើតឡើង
Example: We have to do everything possible to bring about the change to our laws.


17.Brign up : to raise a kid, to raise a topic or a problem for discussion លើកមកនិយាយ ឬចិញ្ចឹម
Example 1: The world leader meeting will bring up global warming and solutions.

Example 2 : She is bringing up 3 kids and old parents.


18. Call off : to cancel a plan or a meeting លុបចោល
Example: Let’s call off our trip this week since everyone is busy.


19. Calm down : to hold our temper, to be patient, stop being angry or excited ធ្វើចិត្តអោយត្រជាក់
Example : Sometimes I can’t calm down when someone is smoking near me.


20. Carry on : continue doing something បន្ត
Example : Carry on doing your good job.


21. Pick up : get something from the floor or get somebody from a place រើស ឬទៅយកនរណាម្នាក់
Example 1 : Look! There is a pen on the floor, please pick it up.

Example 2 : Tomorrow a 9.am., I will pick up you at your home. Please get ready.


22. Drop off : take someone somewhere and leave them there. ដាក់នរម្នាក់ចុះនៅកន្លែងណាមួយ
Example : Please drop me off near the supermarket.


23. Come across : find or meet something or somebody unexpectedly. ជួបដោយចៃដន្យ
Example : I came across my old friend while I was shopping yesterday.


24. Come apart : break into pieces បែក
Example : The vase came apart when I dropped it on the floor.


25. Come up with : to think of, to have or to produce an idea, a solution or a plan មានគំនិត មានយោបល មានដំណើស្រាយ
Example : Finally we came up with a new way to fix that problem.


26. Cut down : to reduce the amount of something កាត់បន្ថយ
Example : I try to cut down the amount of coffee I drink every day but I can’t.


27. Cut off : to disconnect, to stop something or to interrupt កាត់បន្ថយ
Example: If we don’t pay electricity bill on time, the electricity will be cut off.


28. Do over : to do something from the beginning again since we did it badly. ធ្វើឡើងវិញ
Example : Please read the instruction carefully or you'll have to do it over. 


29.Dress up : to wear smartly specifically when joining a formal event. ស្លៀកពាក់ផ្លូវកា
Example : We normally dress up when we join a wedding. 


30. Drop by : to have a quick or short visit to a particular place ចូលលេងមួយភ្លេត
Example : I'll drop by your shop tomorrow.

keep up with : to stay at the same level or speed as someone else តាមទាន់

Example : I can't put up with bullies.
