A verb is simply an action done by a person. It is the foundation specifically for English learners at the very beginner level. They need to be able to describe the action that they do with their parts of the bodies. In this lesson, you will be learning essential verbs used with part of the head, hands and legs with simple English explanations, examples, Khmer translations and practice.
Eye Verbs
See : notice something, ឃើញ
Example : If we open our eyes, we see things around us.
Look : Use your eyes to see something មើល
Example : Look! The sky is very dark.
Watch Look at something for some time
Example: My grandparents always watch TV before to go to bed.
Stare : Look at something for a long time សំឡក់
Example : Don't stare at me like this. I'm so shy.
Glance : Take a quick look ក្រឡេកមើលឆភ្លែត
Example : ROZA balanced at her watch to check the time.
Peek : Look secretly or quickly លួចមើល
Example : She peeked through the window to see what was going on.
Gaze : Look steadily, often with interest សំឡឹងមើលដោយការសរសើ
Example : The tourists are gazing at the incredible Angkor Wat Temple.
Observe : Watch carefully អង្កេត ឬសង្កេត
Example : I like to observe my plants.
Notice : See and pay attention to something កត់សំគាល់
Example : Do you notice something weird in the water right there?
Blink Open and close your eyes quickly ព្រិចភ្នែក
Example : We blink around 15 to 20 times per minutes.
Wink : Close one eye quickly ញាក់ចិញ្ចើម
Example : She winked at me and I was so shy.
Scan : Look over something quickly អានលឿន
Example : Please scan the passage and answer the questions.
Basic Mouth Verbs
Speak : Say words or talk. និយាយ (ភាសា) Ex. I can speak English and Khmer very well.
Talk : Have a conversation. ជជែកគ្នា
Example: What are they talking about?
Say : Tell or express something. និយាយអំពីអ្វីមួយ
Example : can you say something please?
Shout : Say something very loudly. ស្រែក
Example : Kids love shouting much.
Whisper : Speak in a very soft voice. ខ្សឹប
Example : We wisher because we don't want other people know.
Mumble : Speak in a low or unclear voice. និយាយវល់ៗ មិនច្បាស់
Example : Please don't mumble. Speak clearly because I cannot hear you.
Smile : Move your mouth to show you are happy. ញញឹម
Example : I often smile when I meet people.
Laugh : Make sounds because you think something is funny. សើច
Example : We laugh when we are told a fun joke.
Kiss : Touch your lips to someone or something as a sign of love. ថើប Example : She always kisses her kids before they go to school
Lick : Pass your tongue over something. លិត
Example : When eating an ice cream, people don't bite but lick.
Bite : Use your teeth to cut or break something. ខាំ
Example : Sometimes, I bite my nail.
Hand Verbs
Hold : keep something in your hand . កាន់ឬយួរ
Ex. She is holding an expensive handbag.
Grab : take something quickly ចាប់យកអ្វីំមួយរហ័ស កញ្ឆក់យក
Ex. I don’t have much time so I often grab a banana for breakfast.
Pick up : lift something with your hand រើស
Ex. Hey! There is trash on the floor. Can you pick it up?
Carry : take something from one place to another យួរ សែង លី ជញ្ជូន
Ex. Tom is carrying a large bag in his hand.
Touch : put your hand on something ប៉ះ
Ex. Don’t touch things in the museum.
Push : move something away from you រុញ
Ex. Please push to open the door.
Pull : move something toward you . ទាញ
Ex. Could you please help me pull this table?
Throw : send something through the air គប់ គ្រវែង ចោល
Ex. He can throw a ball so far.
Catch: stop and hold something thrown to you ចាប់
Ex. Throw me that ball and I’ll catch it.
Wave : move your hand to greet someone បក់ដៃ
Ex. We wave when we see someone we know.
Clap: hit your hands together ទះដៃ
Ex. Please clap for him.
Point : show something with your finger ចង្អុល
Ex. Don’t point at my face. It is so rude to do that.
Write : make letters or words សរសេរ
Ex. I am writing lessons for this website.
Draw : make a picture គូរ
Ex. I can draw picture of animals.
Shake : move something back and forth ក្រឡុក
Ex. Shake it well before you drink it.
Open : move something so it is not closed បើក
Ex. Could you open the windows please?
Close : shut something បិទ
Ex. Please close the door gently.
Lift: raise something up លើកឡើង
Ex : Tom is so strong that he can lift a car.
Give : hand something to someone អោយ
Ex. Roza gave me 10$ yesterday.
Slap: to hit someone of something with a open palm. ទះកំផ្លៀង
Ex: She was so angry and she slapped on the desk loudly.
