Master Adverbs: A Complete Guide
1. Adding -ly to Adjectives
Most adverbs of manner are formed by adding -ly to adjectives:
• quick → quickly (She ran quickly)
• careful → carefully (He drove carefully)
• soft → softly (She spoke softly)
• slow → slowly (The turtle moved slowly)
2. Adding -ily (When adjectives end in -y)
When adjectives end in -y, change the y to i and add -ly:
• happy → happily (They played happily)
• angry → angrily (He shouted angrily)
• easy → easily (She solved it easily)
• lazy → lazily (The cat stretched lazily)
3. Irregular Adverbs
Some adverbs are irregular and don't follow the -ly pattern:
• good → well (She sings well)
• fast → fast (He runs fast)
• hard → hard (They work hard)
• late → late (We arrived late)
4. Adverbs of Degree
Adverbs of degree tell us about the intensity or extent of an action:
• very (It's very hot today)
• quite (The movie was quite interesting)
• really (I really enjoyed it)
• extremely (She's extremely talented)
• too (This coffee is too strong)
• enough (You're smart enough to understand)
