Flying a Kite
A windy day is a good day for flying a kite. The sky looks bright, and the kite dances like a colorful bird. Every afternoon, Mia and her dad go to the big open field. The field has lots of tall grass and a clear view of the sky. They bring a shiny kite with a long tail. The wind is the helper for the kite. It pushes the kite up, up, into the blue air.
First, Mia does a small practice. She holds the spool of string in one hand and the kite in the other. Her dad tells her to run a little. The wind catches the kite, and it starts to rise. Mia smiles. The kite climbs higher and higher. The tail sways side to side, like it is waving hello to the clouds.
Sometimes the wind is strong. It can pull your arms fast. If the wind is very strong, Mia's dad asks her to pause and check the string. They want to keep the kite safe and not pull it too hard. Other times, the wind is gentle. Then the kite glides slowly, making soft curves in the air. Mia watches the kite dip and rise. It looks like a graceful bird riding the breeze.
To keep safe, they wear bright clothes and stand away from trees and power lines. They look up often to track the kite's path. If the kite tilts to one side, Mia pulls a little more string to right itself. If it dives, she lets out a bit more string to rise again.
When the afternoon ends, the kite comes down with a soft flutter. Mia thanks the wind for the fun day. She stores the kite away and waves goodbye to the sky. Flying a kite on a windy day is a simple, happy joy that makes imagination soar.
