Inseparable Phrasal Verbs

There are two types of Phrasal verbs which are separable and inseparable or non separable phrasal verbs. First thing first, we need to know what a Phrasal Verb is. Basically, a phrasal verb is formed  by using a verb + preposition, which is also called a particle. 

Some examples of Phrasal verbs ( Verb + particle)

  • Turn on
  • Turn off
  • Get long
  • Keep on
  • Break up
  • Carry on
  • Get along with

Inseparable Phrasal Verb

For inseparable phrasal verb, we cannot separate or split the verb from its particle or it will not make sense. See the example below. 

Carry on : means continue ( Ex. Please carry on doing your good job.) If we split verb "carry" from its particle "on" it doesn't make sense. We cannot say. Please carry doing on your good job.

Here is a list of commonly used inseparable phrasal verbs with meanings and examples.

Break up 💔 Meaning: to end a relationship
Count on 🤝 Meaning: to trust or rely on someone
Drop by 🚪Meaning: to visit for a short time
Get along with 😊 Meaning: to have a good relationship
Get together 🎉 Meaning: to meet or spend time together
Grow up 🌱 Meaning: to become an adult
Pick on 😠 Meaning: to be mean to someone
Run into 🤗 Meaning: to meet someone by chance
Take after 🧬 Meaning: to look or act like a family member

- They broke up years ago.
- You can count on me. I am always honest.
- I will drop by your house when I am free.
- ROZA gets along with her classmates and teacher.
- People normally get get together on Khmer New Year's Day.
- The boys pick on the new student.
- He wants to be a doctor when he grows up.
- I ran into my teacher at the market.
- She takes after her mother.

get over 💪 – recover from
look for 🔍 – try to find
come across 📖 – find by chance
depend on 🔗 – rely on
believe in 🌟 – trust; have faith in
take care of ❤️ – look after
run out of 🚫 – have no more
get along with 😊 – have a good relationship
listen to 🎧 – pay attention to sound
wait for ⏳ – stay until someone/something arrives
deal with 🛠️ – handle a problem
care about 💖 – think something is important
belong to 🏠 – be owned by
