English Folktale : Brave Farmer and The Big Tiger

Brave Farmer and The Big Tiger
Long long ago, in a small village near a dense forest, there lived a middle-aged farmer named Chan. He was humble, poor, hardworking, determined and brave. Every day, Chan went to his fields early in the morning to grow rice, corn, and other vegetables to support his wife and two young children. Although life was very tough, he never gave up his hard work.

Near the village, there was a large forest that everyone feared because a fierce tiger lived there. The tiger was cruel and violent. It attacked animals and people without mercy. Many villagers’ animals were eaten by the tiger, and people no longer dared to enter the forest or work on their farm near that forest.

One day, while Chan was working in a field close to the forest, the fierce tiger came out and roared loudly. It shouted: “From today onward, all villagers must bring animals or food to me every day. If not, I will eat not just the animals but also the people in this village.” All the villagers were terrified and ran to hide in their houses. Chan, however, stood calmly despite his fear. He thought that if no one did anything, the village would never have peace. So he decided to use his wisdom and courage to face the fierce tiger.

One day Chan told the villagers that, " Today I will go into the forest to kill that cruel tiger". The villagers tried to stop him but he said, “If no one is brave, this village will face a disaster one day".

The next day, Chan took only an old piece of wood and a rope and walked into the forest. When he met the tiger, it laughed loudly and prepared to attack. Chan did not run away. He calmly said: “Great tiger, I know you are strong, but strength has no value without wisdom. If you keep eating people, one day you will be destroyed.” The tiger mocked him and replied: “You poor little farmer, how dare you advise me? What can you do to me?”
Chan answered: “If you don’t believe me, I have a challenge. If you win, the village will respect you every day. If you lose, you must leave this forest forever.” The tiger agreed because of its pride.

Chan tied the rope to a large old branch of a big tree. He said, " If you can break that rope, you win and villagers will do what you want. Seeing that tiny rope, the tiger was fully confident and without any delays, he quick jumped to break the rope then the large branch broke and fell on the tiger.  The tiger couldn't move, he was in great pain and weak. He surrendered and begged the man to help him. Chan didn't trust the tiger then he grabbed the stick and hit the tiger on its head. The tiger died. From that day on, people  in the village live Thier normal life in peace and joy.
