Master the Art of Tag Questions

📚 Learn the Rules

Question tags are short questions added to the end of statements. They're used to confirm information or ask for agreement.

Rule 1: Verb "To Be"
If the statement uses "am/is/are/was/were", use the same verb in the tag.
• Positive statement → Negative tag
• Negative statement → Positive tag
✓ She is happy, isn't she?
✓ They weren't late, were they?
Rule 2: Auxiliary Verbs
Use auxiliary verbs (do/does/did, have/has/had, will/would) in the tag.
• Match the auxiliary to the tense
• Opposite polarity (positive ↔ negative)
✓ You like coffee, don't you?
✓ She hasn't called, has she?
Rule 3: Modal Verbs
Use the same modal verb (can/could, should, would, must, might) in the tag.
• Keep the modal in the tag
• Opposite polarity
✓ He can swim, can't he?
✓ We shouldn't go, should we?
